Toyota’s new Rumion MPV, based on Maruti Suzuki Ertiga revealed, may be launched in India

Coming to the new Rumion, the MPV is nothing but a rebadged Ertiga, which is already quite popular.

After much speculation, Toyota’s version of the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga-based MPV has been revealed in South Africa. Named Toyota Rumion, the new MPV looks almost identical to the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga sold in other markets like India and Indonesia. The name Rumiom is not new to Toyota and the brand has reintroduced it for its line-up of Suzuki-based cars.

Both the Toyota Glanza and the Starlet are based on the Suzuki Baleno and the upcoming Toyota Belta looks similar to the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, but these are just a few other models that Toyota has launched or is about to launch under different names.

Coming to the new Rumion, the MPV is nothing but a rebadged Ertiga, which is already quite popular in many areas. The current-gen Ertiga was launched in Indonesia in April 2018 and went on sale in India later that year.

Except for the Toyota badging, the Rumion matches the Ertiga exactly. This will mean that there will be no mechanical changes and it will come with the same 1.5-litre petrol engine that is found on the Ertiga globally.

Its engine generates 105hp and 138Nm of torque and is mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed torque converter automatic transmission. Like the Ertiga, it also gets an eight-seater three-row cabin.

The Maruti Suzuki Ertiga is made in India as well as in the MPV-savvy Indonesian market. The model seen in South Africa looks like a made-in-India version.

Toyota Rumion: Will it come to India?

According to reports, Toyota will probably introduce the Ciaz-based Belta sedan in India first, which is now being seen as an alternative to the discontinued Yaris. The Rumion MPV based on the Ertiga is also likely to arrive in Toyota’s Indian showrooms in the future.
