Lok Sabha by-elections are being held today in Asansol, one of the largest cities in West Bengal. Trinamool candidate actor-politician Shatrughan Sinha is contesting the by-election from Asansol Lok Sabha seat, for which today can be considered as a test day. Let me tell you, by-elections are going to be held in four assembly seats of three states today.
Asansol parliamentary seat in Bengal has become vacant after the resignation of BJP MP Babul Supriya. Trinamool has never won an Asansol seat before, but former film star Shatrughan Sinha, who quit the BJP in 2019, is expected to make an impact among the non-Bengali community in the constituency. Sinha’s BJP rival claims to be the ‘daughter of Asansol’. The BJP has sent a number of star campaigners, including Bengali artists, to the polls in its horrific campaign.
I am also a Bengali Babu – Shatrughna Sinha
At the same time, the BJP accused Mamata Banerjee of bringing in an outsider to the Asansol contest, in response to which Shatrughan Sinha said that he was no longer just a ‘Bihari Babu’ but also a ‘Bengali Babu’. He often breaks down in Bengali in his preaching speeches. He said, “Now besides Bihari Babu, I am also a Bengali Babu.
When did any party win the Asansol seat?
We tell you, from 1957 to 1967, the Asansol Lok Sabha seat was held by the Congress. From 1967 to 1971, the Lok Sabha seat was controlled by the United Socialist Party. The CPI (M) held the seat from 1971 to 1980. Congress held the important seat until 1989, before making a comeback. From 1989 to 2014, this seat was held by CPI (M). The BJP won the seat for the first time in the 2014 general elections, when Babul Supriya was elected from Asansol. Supriya won again on a BJP ticket in 2019, after which he also became a minister in the Narendra Modi-led central government.
However, soon after the 2021 assembly elections in West Bengal, Supriya left the BJP and joined the Trinamool Congress. Asansol has resigned from the Lok Sabha, needing a by-election. At the same time, due to the sudden death of Trinamool MLA Subrata Mukherjee, a by-election had to be held for Baliganj Assembly constituency, who died in November 2021.
