New Delhi: Delhi Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana has got a big relief from the Delhi High Court and he will continue in his post. The Delhi High Court has dismissed the application challenging the appointment of Rakesh Asthana to the post of Delhi Police Commissioner. Let us tell you that an NGO had challenged his appointment.
Earlier the Delhi High Court had sought the answer
An NGO, Center for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) along with several other organizations had filed intervention petitions in the Delhi High Court. Hearing this, a bench of Delhi High Court Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Jyoti Singh issued a notice to the central government asking it to present its side. Along with this, reply was also sought from Rakesh Asthana.
The appointment was opposed
The petitions opposed the appointment of Rakesh Asthana to the post of Delhi Police Commissioner and said that the rules were violated. The petitioners had argued that an officer can be appointed only when there is at least 3 months left in retirement. Let us tell you that Rakesh Asthana was appointed as the Commissioner of Delhi Police on July 27 by the Union Home Ministry, while he was to retire from the post of BSF Director on July 31, but he was given the appointment a few days before retirement.

Who is Rakesh Asthana?
Rakesh Asthana is a 1984 batch IPS officer. His father Hare Krishna Asthana was a teacher at Netarhat Government School in Jharkhand. From here Rakesh Asthana reached Ranchi for further studies after passing the matriculation examination. He did his further studies from St. Xavier’s College, Ranchi. After clearing the civil exam, he got selected in IPS and got Gujarat cadre.
Played an important role in the investigation of fodder scam
Earlier, Rakesh Asthana has also been a special director in the CBI. Rakesh Asthana had an important role in the investigation of the fodder scam in Bihar. He had investigated the fodder scam while being the CBI SP. Rakesh Asthana is counted among the sharpest IPS officers. Rakesh Asthana is the same officer under whose supervision two FIRs were registered in the Sushant Singh-Riya Chakraborty drugs connection case.
Important role played in Asaram case
As Surat commissioner, Rakesh Asthana had started an important investigation in the Asaram case under his supervision, in which Asaram and his son were also arrested. Rakesh Asthana has led many major operations while in BSF. Apart from this, while living in NCB, he has done major drug operations in Delhi, Mumbai and many states of the country.
