After this incident, the political leaders started competing to show solidarity with the farmers. The state government is in the process of inaugurating and laying the foundation stone of the development project ahead of the Assembly elections early next year. Akhilesh Yadav has also recently developed a relationship with his uncle Shivpal Singh Yadav, who formed his own political party – the Progressive Socialist Party – on the last day of the previous SP government.

The state has also witnessed three-tier panchayat elections amid the epidemic. According to government compensation figures, about 2,000 government employees, many of them school teachers, lost their lives in April-May while on election duty. In May, at least 40 people died in Aligarh after consuming fake liquor.
