British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said on Thursday that strengthening ties with India was more important than ever in the wake of the Ukraine crisis. Truss made the remarks after a meeting with visiting Foreign Minister S Jayashankar. Truss said the crisis in Ukraine highlighted the need for like-minded countries to work together. He said the Ukraine crisis would have far-reaching implications for the world.
Jayashankar and Truss, while conducting a comprehensive review of Indo-UK relations, emphasized the need to maintain a strategic focus in the Indo-Pacific region. “I think it is very important to impose sanctions on Russia,” Tras said while addressing the India-UK Strategic Futures Forum with Jayashankar.
“Strengthening relations with India is more important than ever because we (Vladimir Putin) live in a more risky world than what we see in Putin’s horrific invasion of Ukraine,” he said.
Truss seeks solidarity to “prevent” Russian aggression and reduce global strategic dependence on the country. A statement from the British High Commission said the visit was ahead of a major NATO and G7 summit next week.
Ahead of the talks, the British High Commission said in a statement that Liz Truss, during her meeting with Jayashankar, would emphasize the importance of working together with democracies to stop Russia’s aggression in Ukraine.
In addition to Jayashankar, Truss also met Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and National Security Adviser Ajit Doval. Notably, many foreign dignitaries have visited India in the last few days. US Deputy National Security Adviser Dalip Singh arrived in India on Wednesday, and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov also visited on Thursday.
