Transgender census in Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh Ministry of Social Welfare has proposed to conduct a census for transgender people in the state to formulate and implement welfare plans for this disadvantaged department. If this is a census, it will be the first such census. The census will be conducted to identify transgender people in the state and register them in the UID (Aadhaar card) so that they can avail the benefits of the government scheme. It will be conducted in 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh and a database will be created and shared with the central government. .
Sources said that the ministry has proposed a budget of Rs 200 crore for the welfare of the transgender population in the state, which will be spent on providing education, basic amenities, colonization and rehabilitation of elderly members of the community. Ministry sources said that out of the budget of Tk 200 crore, about Tk 25 crore will be spent on education of the youth of the community. Sources said that after the meeting of the Transgender Welfare Board, the ministry submitted the proposal to the state government in a review meeting with the chief minister last week.
Notably, on April 18, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath asked the state government officials to take welfare measures for the people of the hijra community. In his first term as Chief Minister, Adityanath formed a ‘Transgender Welfare Board’ in the state in 2021. However, the first meeting of the Transgender Welfare Board was held on April 19, 2022 under the chairmanship of Social Welfare Minister Asim Arun. Let us know that the transgender population in Uttar Pradesh is around 2 million and most of them have very limited means of education and livelihood.
